WHO WE ARE

Working Towards A Better Tomorrow

Azalia's Heart, The Azalia Walker Edwards Foundation founded in November 2020. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  Azalia’s Heart Foundation responds to matters that are created by shelter insecurities.  Our mission is to help underserved citizens to sustain a higher quality of life. Our motivation is to respond to the needs of our fellow citizens. We facilitate our mission by:

  • Feeding the homeless community throughout the New Orleans Metropolitan area.

  • Provide gifts of acknowledgement to mother’s who are in shelter housing.

  • Provide school supplies and uniforms to students who are declared homeless by area schools.

  • Provide disaster relief assistance to the surrounding parishes of Greater New Orleans

    • Washington, Tangipahoa, St. Tammany, St. John the Baptist, St. James, St. Charles, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Orleans, and Jefferson.

Azalia’s Heart works together with private and public stakeholders to facilitate our mission. Azalia’s Heart success is dependent upon three core values. We acknowledge the underserved homeless citizens of the parishes of Greater New Orleans. We invite regional stakeholders to support their constituency who are experiencing housing insecurities. We mobilize impassioned citizens to respond to the needs of their neighbor.

A BIT ABOUT US

Our Roots

Azalia Walker Edwards was a lady with an enormous loving heart.  She would open her heart and home to anyone, especially her kitchen.  It didn't matter if you were friend or foe, she didn't want to see anyone hungry.  She would give her last to help someone. If she couldn't afford to help someone out she would turn to family and friends and ask for help. They would all pull their resources to help someone in need. Azalia was not financially wealthy.  She had a wealth of compassion and love.  Azalia's love for helping other people passed down to her descendants. Hence the start of Azalia's Heart, The Azalia Walker Edwards Foundation.

Azalia’s Heart was founded in November 2020. We are an incorporated nonprofit 501(C)(3) community outreach organization.  The founders are DaVen, Dionne, Hakim, and Geneva Lewis. Our Board of Directors consist of humanitarians with hearts for helping individuals and families improve their quality of life.  Our mission is to assist underserved individuals and families with sustaining a higher quality of life. Prior to the conception of Azalia's Heart we partnered with other foundations.  Before becoming a 501(C)(3) nonprofit we partnered with Garden of Hope Ministries and R.E.J.O.I.C.E., Inc. where we helped serve approximately 3500 citizens for 17 years.  Since our inception in 2020 we have served over 1500 citizens.

We started aiding for individuals and families in May 2003. Over the years we have provided thousands of meals and toiletry items to the Metropolitan area’s homeless individuals and families. We have also provided gifts, clothes and household items to the Metropolitan area women’s shelters. The aid provided over the years has been self-funded.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we have not been able to afford to provide assistance to our homeless underprivileged individuals and families as we did in the past.

Azalia’s Heart is an organization of resources for individuals and families of the New Orleans Metropolitan area.  Our assistance is available 24 hours a day.  We welcome your donations and referrals.
